CONTRECOEUR DRESS

DESCRIPTION

The two asymmetrical Contrecoeur tartans were designed by Madelaine Asselin in 1992 and registered in October of that year. (The copyright was registered with CIPO in the following year.) Both this and the dress tartan have been adopted by the town of Contrecoeur.

The following notes are translated from an article written by the designer and apply to both Contrecoeur tartans.

These tartans were conceived to underline facts or characteristic events of the region. The colours have a symbolic value, reflecting our history, natural resources or climate.

The garnet red represents the courage of our founders which underlies our motto: ‘To a courageous heart everything is possible’.

The golden yellow honours our prestigious past and our holiday centres, of which “Les Greves” has been open since 1912.

The ocean blue recalls the river Saint-Laurent which baths our banks, and links us with the native country of our founder, Antoine-Pécaudy of Contrecoeur.

The ancestral white manifests the pride and determination of our people, the wealth of our heritage and our feeling of belonging.

The pine green represents our gigantic pines, the fecund soil, the islands of Contrecoeur, and the duck shooting.

The steely grey recalls the significant development of Contrecoeur with the coming of the railway, the ports and the steel industry.

Leather brown recalls the footwear industry, which has been important since 1883.
