This tartan was commissioned by Simpson's department stores in 1967, Canada's centennial year. Their advertisement in the Montreal Gazette (August 2nd, 1967) says
"The colours bespeak Canada ... coast to coast:
green, for the Atlantic;
ultramarine, for the Pacific;
azure blue, for the sky;
brown, for the earth;
gold, for the eastern sunrise;
red, for the western sunset."
